After Bungie, the creators behind the popular Halo and Destiny series of games was hit with layoffs a month ago, the future surrounding the mobile version of the latter was in question. However, it seems that the popular First Person Shooter (FPS) coming to mobile as Destiny Rising might still be in development by Bungie in collaboration with NetEase Games.
The layoffs at Bungie sparked doubts about the future of the Destiny franchise
Following the listing of jobs for the franchise back in mid-2021, rumors circulated that Bungie was collaborating with NetEase to develop a mobile game set in the Destiny universe. According to these rumors, NetEase Games had partnered with Bungie to create a first-person shooter specifically for mobile platforms.
While the official sources were just the job listings, anonymous sources at the time suggested that these requirements were for the game and would be an addition to the Destiny series, sparking plenty of speculations. However, these rumors remained unconfirmed, and Bungie did not provide any official statements regarding the project.
However, these rumors once again now reignited when video game insider Kurakasis posted on X (formerly Twitter) that Destiny Rising has not been canceled despite the significant cuts at Bungie. While confirming the title to be Destiny Rising, Kurakasis shared that there has been no definitive confirmation that NetEase’s mobile game has been canceled and assured that the project is still in development.
Bungie recently laid off 220 employees, with 155 reassigned to roles within Sony Interactive Entertainment and around 40 forming a new sub-studio under Sony for a new game. This followed over 100 layoffs late last year, significantly reducing the company’s workforce. Along with these changes was the canceling of Destiny 3 Payback, leaving the Destiny franchise directionless for a while.
However, with these positive reports, fans can now breathe and expect some positive news about the development of Destiny Rising as well as Destiny games for other platforms as well. Keep an eye on this as I’ll be updating on the same as new info emerges.
