Discord is rolling out sponsored ads on its platform

Earn rewards through sponsored quests!

Discord, the famous tech platform which has for many years avoided using advertisements on its platform is now all but set to roll out sponsored ads. The chat platform which has been quite popular in the gaming community has quoted them as sponsored quests as they will allow users to stream themselves with at least one friend watching to get the game-specific rewards.

The sponsored ads will roll out this week and will become a permanent part of the platform

As reported by WSJ, the platform for years, has been avoiding going down this route but has finally now adopted the advertisements. Discord for many years has been the go-to platform for hanging out with friends, chatting, and most significantly in the gaming community communicating while playing games.

The new advertisements added to the platform will be reflected on the bottom left side of the screen, which as stated before will allow users to complete in-game tasks with at least one friend watching to get rewards.

It is still unclear as to how this move will be perceived by the users who appreciated Discord remaining ad-free for many years now. “Discord has famously promoted itself as committed to being ad-free, so this step-change could impact user trust and potentially have them looking for alternative platforms,” quoted Meghana Dhar, a former Instagram executive and tech adviser as per WSJ report.

To still be able to make it up to the users, Discord has stated that users can still opt to turn off the ads from the settings. This will allow the non-interested users to still stick to the platforms and will not alienate them away from the platform.

Discord has been reshuffling its finances for more concrete future operations lately

Discord despite hitting 4 times year-on-year revenue of 600 million compared to 2020, Discord recently laid off 17% of the workforce in January 2024. The company claimed that they hired people more rapidly than they needed. “The cuts were being made to sharpen our focus and improve the way we work together to bring more agility to our organization” quoted CEO Jason Citron.

The platform has traditionally relied on its Nitro subscription, which costs between $2.99 and $9.99 a month for extra revenue. Now the introduction of sponsored advertisements on the platform will further increase the revenue mark for the company in the future. It will be really interesting to see how the global Discord community will react to the sponsored ads.
