Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light, Square Enix’s long-running mobile RPG to end service on January 31, 2024

Cherish the present before it becomes the past!

The popular mobile game Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light will end its service on January 31, 2024, at 3 p.m. JST (11:30 a.m. IST), according to a recent notification on the website of the game from Square Enix. The sale of Gems, the in-game currency, has also ended in accordance with this news. Players can still use their current Gems up to the very end of the game.

Square Enix intends to return unused in-game currency of Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light

Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light was first announced by Square Enix, the corporation in charge of it, in October 2013 and released in January 2014. It became the longest-running Dragon Quest mobile game over the course of almost ten years, entertaining numerous gamers.

Square Enix has revealed that the sale of Gems, the in-game currency, has also come to an end along with the news that Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light’s service will be ending. But you can still use the Gems you already have up until the final conclusion of the game.

If you still have any in-game currency left over after the game’s service has finished, there is good news for you. The creators wish to return this currency, although the exact refund process will be shared at a later date.

We can examine previous Square Enix games that suffered the same fate as well, such as Dragon Quest Dokodemo Monster Parade, which was released in 2015 and ended its service in July 2020, and Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, a mobile game released in September 2021 and ended its service on April 26, 2023. Therefore, the discontinuation of service for a Dragon Quest mobile game is not new.

Why this game is shutting down

The decision to discontinue service, according to the game’s creator, Issei Ota, was driven by the challenge of maintaining the game’s balance in light of recent inflation as well as the need to wisely employ development resources.

Fans of the franchise will be heartbrokenly reminded by the loss of Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light of the continuously evolving nature of the gaming industry and the challenges publishers and developers confront in retaining their most cherished creations.
