The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has set a target to turn its major city and tourist attraction Dubai into a major hub for gaming by 2033 and be among the top ten cities in the world for game companies.
The Dubai Program for Gaming 2033 branches across improving talent, content, and technology
The two officials who outlined the plan were Hadi Badri, CEO of Dubai Economic Development Corporation, and Abdulla AlGaoud, digital operations director in Dubai Chambers, at the Dubai GameExpo Summit. Badri highlighted the enormous investment in infrastructure aimed at making Dubai a knowledge-sharing and networking hub for the gaming industry.
He assured the industry of the unwavering support of the government. AlGaoud unveiled the Dubai Program for Gaming 2033, which focuses on talent, content, and technology to realize the digital economy in the UAE. Investments were made, business support was provided, and education programs aimed to deliver 30,000 jobs and a $1 billion industry by 2023.
Now, although the UAE joins the other countries in helping the gaming industry grow, it will compete heavily with its neighbor nation Saudi Arabia, which heavily invests in the gaming sector and other regions across the Middle East and North Africa. In the meanwhile, established industries like the UK, the US, Finland, Canada, and China, and regions like Turkey, are all trying to capture the same talent.
Dubai intends to compete globally, with substantial investments and government support, under its long-term digital strategy. UAE might look to follow the Saudi Arabia route, where mobile gaming as a major driver in Saudi Arabia has seen success, especially thanks to the Savvy Games Group, which is the owner of mobile game developer Scopely, the company behind popular titles such as Stumble Guys, Kingdom Maker, and MONOPOLY GO!
