Developed by Frank’s Football Studio, a recently founded crew consisting of games industry veterans with more than five decades of experience between them, Foxy’s Football Islands is a casual soccer game that spans at least three genres. One of those is football. The central gameplay hook sees you staring into the maw of the goal and using your finger to flick a ball at a small target.

Sometimes this target is moving. Sometimes, the wind is roaring across the penalty area and threatening to whip your ball into the stands. In both cases, you need to make adjustments to your shots to compensate for the obstacle. But the goal remains the same: hit the target. 

Your most common reward for scoring a direct hit is a chunk of money, and you can increase the amount of money you make by doubling or tripling your bet – though you’ll also double or triple the amount of energy you spend to take that shot, so you’d better not miss.

The maximum amount of energy you can have in reserve is 50 units, with each shot costing one, two, or three. Energy replenishes automatically over time, or you can just buy energy in bundles for real cash, along with gems. 

To buy coins, meanwhile, you’ll have to spend gems, which you can earn through gameplay or buy with cash. It’s not as complicated as it sounds. What to spend your money on? Construction, of course. While you’re not standing in front of the goal, you’re back at your island paradise constructing and upgrading a series of gorgeously presented, themed buildings. And each upgrade costs money.

Once you’ve upgraded every building on your island to its maximum potential, you graduate – via a fun little coin-collecting top-down sailing minigame – to the next themed fantasy island in the chain. As you hop from island to island you expand your empire, earn stars, and consolidate your iron grip on the leaderboards. 

Right. Back to the football. After coins, the other rewards for hitting a target include opportunities to steal from friends and to pulverize other players’ islands with gigantic boulders, cruelly decorated to look like footballs. Attacks are as simple as tapping on your chosen target while stealing involves flipping cards until you either turn over all the coins, hit a chest (good), or land on a whistle (bad). 

These unsporting attacks are random by default, but you can choose to pick a friend or take revenge on a previous assailant. Whichever you do, coins are your reward, normally in copious quantities. A couple of other things can happen when you hit the target. You can get the chance to shoot at a moving target for a bumper reward, and you can obtain goalie gloves, which defend your island from one attack.

Of course, that means you’ll often find that your attacks are blocked by other players’ gloves. While buildings are your biggest expenditure in Foxy’s Football Islands, you can also spend coins on a variety of upgradeable upgrades. 

These increase the amount you steal, reduce the speed at which the moving target moves, reduce the effect of the wind, and create a field to give your buildings a chance to avoid damage. In other words, they’re an investment in your future success. As you work your way through the campaign you’ll also unlock a variety of collectibles, which you can trade with your friends or keep for your virtual display shelf.
