Goddess of Victory: NIKKE changes character design after Artist calls out similarities

A similarity seen?

In a recent gaming controversy, fans of the popular mobile game Goddess of Victory: NIKKE expressed concern about the striking similarities between characters in the game’s latest event and the artist neco‘s FALSLANDER Samurai artwork design. Following the concern, Shift Up, the game developers, have taken steps to address the problem.

Players pointed out that the melee squad NPC’s in-game sprite resembled neco’s FALSLANDER Samurai. Both characters wore a similar color scheme, nearly identical hairstyles, and a red string headdress while wielding katanas. The similarities prompted neco to share their thoughts on X, stating that the “parts composition was almost the same” and expressing disappointment at the apparent coincidence.

In response to the artist and the gaming community’s concerns, neco revealed that the Goddess of Victory: Nikke management team had contacted them. The developers apologized and promised to investigate and resolve the issue.

The latest update to the game includes a revised design for the NPC, including a completely new ponytail hairstyle and the removal of several accessories. This change addresses fan and artist concerns about the similarities to neco’s original character.

The controversy did not end with the NPC; some fans pointed out similarities between Scarlet: Black Shadow, the game’s most recent recruitable character, and neco’s FALSLANDER Samurai. The community is waiting for any further developments or responses from the developers regarding this additional concern.

For those unfamiliar with neco, the artist is well-known for their work on Girls’ Frontline and the FALSLANDER series of illustrations, which features the character who sparked the recent controversy. The incident emphasizes the importance of recognizing and respecting artists’ creative contributions to the gaming community.
