HoYoverse recovers over $5.38 million in 2025 as crackdown on Genshin Impact leaks and cheats intensifies

The crackdown isn't wallet friendly!

Story Highlights
  • HoYoverse recovered over $5.38 million in damages and settlements during 2025.
  • The company filed civil lawsuits against 2,388 individuals linked to leaks and cheats.

Seeing “million” in the title and next to a gacha game usually means revenue. Well, it is a similar story, but this time, though, HoYoverse’s millions came from something very different: legal settlements.

HoYoverse has revealed that it recovered more than 37 million yuan (around $5.38 million USD) in damages and settlements during 2025 as part of its large-scale crackdown on leaks, cheats, and other violations across its games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail.

Several leak communities have been arrested while some others have been shut down

According to a report shared on HoYoverse’s official WeChat account and reported by 4Gamer, the publisher received over 100,000 player-submitted reports related to various violations throughout the year. These reports included cases involving the spread of false rumours, leaks of unreleased content, distribution of cheat tools, and even private server operations.

To tackle these violations, HoYoverse’s legal department took action during the year. The company cooperated with authorities in 22 criminal investigations and filed civil lawsuits against 2,388 individuals involved in leaking or cheating-related activities.

A total of 1,240 infringers issued public apologies, while compensation obtained through court rulings and settlements exceeded 37 million yuan ($ 5.38 million). HoYoverse also reported removing more than 109,000 infringing links and suspending 988 accounts tied to violations.

HoYoverse says it successfully targeted 503 retailers connected to cheat distribution. One notable case involved an online shop known as Raindrop Studio, which was ordered by the court to pay roughly $380,000 in damages after providing proxy gameplay services using cheat tools.

Looking at trends, these kinds of “revenue” numbers might increase in 2026 as well. I write that because earlier this year, three individuals connected to the HomDGCat Wiki, a well-known source for Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail leaks, were arrested in a copyright infringement case last month.

The fear is also noticeably mounting among other leakers as well. Recently, Seele Leaks, a well-known Telegram channel dedicated to HoYoverse leaks, announced it would permanently shut down and withdraw from leak-related activities, alongside Hakushin.

HoYoverse tackling leakers isn’t a new story; they have been actively doing this for the last few years. Now, things have gotten strict, so there might be no escaping punishment.
