League of Legends: Wild Rift crosses $1 billion in lifetime spending for its consumers

The game is in the top four in lifetime consumer spend

League of Legends: Wild Rift, a MOBA video game developed and published by Riot Games, has crossed a prestigious milestone of $1 billion spend for its consumers. Through this achievement, the popular title joined the billion-dollar elite club with a few other apps.

A report from data.ai shows that only 101 other games and 26 apps have the same achievement unlocked. And, Wild Rift just became the latest addition to the list. Since its release in October 2020, Wild Rift spent more than $1 billion through the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Number of Downloads and Revenue show a promising future for Wild Rift

When it comes to the lifetime downloads ranking, Moonton‘s Mobile Legends is leading from the front. It has the highest lifetime downloads as well as active users worldwide. However, Honor of Kings sits at the top in lifetime consumer spending, followed by Mobile Legends in the second position and Wild Rift in fourth.

China has the biggest impact on the game as the largest number of the title’s downloads and revenue come from the country. From September 2022 to August 2023, the game received 22.4 million installs; most of which came from China. In addition to the previous 12 month’s number, Wild Rift surpassed 111 million worldwide downloads. Thus, the game became the third highest-grossing MOBA title with over $188 million in global consumer spending. Not surprisingly, the amount of consumer spending is also the highest in China, at over $141 million.

Wild Rift is looking at future milestones post the $1 billion club

Though the number gives a hint of a promising future, the actual scenario is different. Wild Rift always tends to walk the opposite path from its PC version, League of Legends. While the mobile adaptation features fast-paced gameplay which could take as much as 10 minutes at tops, the former takes half an hour on average.

This was one of the reasons why Wild Rift became so popular during its early days. The game hit 9.86 million downloads in December 2020. Failing to continue the streak, the number has come down to an average of 1 million per month. A difficult matchmaking system and the game being unfriendly with the higher rank players are a few reasons behind the current performance.

However, the good news is that the game is looking sharp on its mobile optimization. Impressive graphics and action is one of the primary reason for the game to be still in the race. Besides, beginner-friendly adaptations, faster gameplay, and iconic heroes are the core performance pushed by Riot Games. Thus, the long-term player engagement is looking great.

MOBA titles are one of the most popular video game genres irrespective of which platforms they are available. According to a report from statista in 2020, the genre is the 4th most popular among worldwide players leaving sports, racing, strategy, battle royale, etc. behind. After Wild Rift crossed $1 billion consumers spend, how far the game will go in lifetime spending still remains a surprise.
