Netflix to release their iOS games through the App Store due to Apple’s policy

The company cannot release its game for iOS via the Netflix app

Streaming giant Netflix released five games last week and the games were only for the Android platform. The company said that it will bring the games to iOS as soon as possible, but now, Netflix seems to be facing some hindrances due to Apple’s app store policy. The plan to provide an all-in-one experience through the Netflix app itself is not going to see the light of day soon, according to a report by Mark Gurman on Bloomberg. The report stated that “Netflix should upgrade its gaming service by turning it into a cloud-first platform”.

Netflix has to release the games individually on the app store

Netflix has stepped into the mobile gaming market as a content category like films, animation, and reality TV shows. The popular streaming platform announced the global release of five new games not many days ago. According to their plan, the company said to release its games exclusively on their app, but it looks like the journey is not going to be as smooth as they thought.

The company has have introduced the games through a Games Tab in their app but when someone tries to install them, it redirects the user to Google Play Store. And for iOS, the App Store Review Guidelines don’t allow third parties to build all-in-one gaming service apps. So, Netflix has to release the games individually and then users can launch them from their main app.

A long way to establish a game focused market for Netflix

For mobile gaming, users have a lot of options (game/app stores) to choose games from. But when a company is trying to provide games via its mainstream service app available, it violates the guidelines of most of those app-providing services except if the games are played via cloud gaming service.

Surely the app stores won’t want to lose their share of money and it also violates their individualism. So, Netflix’s plan to provide games via their app is only possible when they set up a particular service system or establish their current system in a way that the games are treated in the same way as their other IPs.
