Eric Barone, known as ConcernedApe and the creator of Stardew Valley, has promised that there will be no extra charge for DLC or new updates in any of his games. He made this commitment while responding to a question on X about his upcoming version 1.6.9 update.
ConcernedApe’s decision has already earned a lot of praise from fans
A user on X asked whether fans would be satisfied with a wait for new content if everything added was completely free, including a lot of new features and quality-of-life improvements. ConcernedApe responded by pledging that he would never charge money for any DLC or updates for as long as he creates this, even suggesting users save this in case he ever forgets this.
I think there isn’t much to explain about how big of a game Stardew Valley is. This indie farming game which was released first in 2016 has been one of the best farming simulation games out there, with over 50+ hours of gameplay. Since its release, it has gained millions of downloads across multiple platforms thanks to its pixelated and friendly art style and engaging gameplay.
This means that Haunted Chocolatier, a new project outside the Stardew Universe, will also have free DLCs and updates. Although the game, announced back in 2021, has yet to be released, it is now confirmed that there will be no additional payments for new content apart from in-app purchases.
Even though Stardew Valley is a pay-to-play game, the decision of ConcernedApe to offer free DLC and updates and not charge shows he isn’t focused on profit. Well, this move has already been lauded by the fans of the game in the replies, while many indicated they are okay to pay for updates or even support him to grow the game.
Regarding the 1.6.9 update, he mentioned that the ports and the next PC update are still in progress. Acknowledging the delay, he assured fans that it’s constantly on his mind, and he’s been working on the mobile port daily.
