Tencent’s latest Games Speed Booster apps update will block Chinese players from accessing foreign games

The update arrives this May 31!

The world’s largest video game company Tencent Holdings Ltd will update its games speed booster apps which won’t allow Chinese players to access foreign and unapproved games. The statement came just after China started to reapprove new video games last July. As China has always been keeping an eye on overseas games that wish to enter the world’s largest gaming market, the start of approving games again was quite surprising. The country is again taking action to get rid of games that the Chinese government does not approve of.

Players will lose access to foreign games after the Tencent update

This update by Tencent includes both mobile and PC apps that gamers have been using to login into unapproved games. These applications were the bridge for overseas developers to connect with the Chinese gaming industry. However, once the update starts rolling out on May 31, players will lose connection to those game servers and will no longer be able to play with foreign players. Not only Tencent, but companies like NetEase Inc. also offer such applications.

While Tencent’s action proves the company’s compliance with the lawmakers, a report by Reuters quoted a post from a Chinese internet user written on Weibo, which stated, “This is expected given the direction things are going. It is harder to be a gamer in China by the day.”

China finally starts approving Gaming licenses after nine months

After nine months, the Chinese authority has again started to accept game applications for gaming licenses. A list of 45 games was featured on the website of the National Press and Publication Administration. “We believe the market has been waiting for game approvals, and the news is a positive catalyst since the suspension in Aug-21,” wrote Jefferies analysts, including Thomas Chong. “According to our channel checks, we expect games of different genres will be released in future approvals.” Last August, China ruled allowing teenagers only 3 hours per week to play video games.
