- Fans accused Tower of Saviors of copying Hiyuki's animation from Wuthering Waves, with one sequence even appearing to directly feature Hiyuki's reflection.
- Mad Head Limited removed the promotional video and issued an official apology.
- The studio plans stricter content reviews and AI production guidelines going forward.
Kuro Games’ beloved ARPG, Wuthering Waves, has unexpectedly found itself at the middle of a plagiarism controversy after fans noticed striking similarities between one of its character animations and a recently released character promotional from the classic title, Tower of Saviors. The whole backlash is for the alleged copy of Hiyuki’s character animation.
A reflection mistake made the controversy even worse for the Tower of Saviors
So, according to a report from GameLook, this controversy began after Tower of Saviors released a promotional video for its newest Black-Gold character, Destined Khaganhood – Genghis Khan. And, shortly after the video’s release, fans started pointing out that several scenes, camera movements, visual effects, and even animation sequences looked very similar to WuWa’s Resonance Liberation animation of Hiyuki.

But I believe what made the situation much worse was an apparent production mistake from the TOS side. I mean, in one of the reflective surfaces shown in the video, fans claim the reflected character looked like Hiyuki from WuWa instead of the newly ToG’s Genghis Khan. And like you can imagine, this discovery by fans spread online rapidly, with many accusing the studio of directly copying Kuro Games’ work, with one saying, “They didn’t even try to hide Hiyuki.“
Mad Head responds after facing backlash from players, with the studio taking corrective action
The good news is that Mad Head Limited, the devs of ToS, released an official apology a few days back after facing mounting criticism, acknowledging that parts of the promotional video were highly similar to another work, and admitted that the content “does not meet our requirements for the production and review of promotional materials.” Right after, the studio also removed the video and announced an internal investigation into how the issue occurred.
And according to their statement, the studio plans to strengthen its content review process, improve promotional material checks, and establish stricter guidelines for AI-assisted production to regain the fanbase’s trust. Furthermore, they’re also prohibiting the direct production of third-party works in the future promotional materials. And while it’s not enough, you’re getting 5 Magic Stones as compensation. Now, this is the second plagiarism controversy just this week, alongside the whole Ouros and Zenless Zone Zero situation.
