Royal Revolt 2 hits 10 years: From birth to its success journey

A major milestone!

Celebrating 10 years in the mobile gaming realm is no small feat. Having spent over five years in the industry myself, I’ve witnessed the release of hundreds of new games every day and seen numerous mobile games falter for various reasons and shut down. Amidst all this, a few titles stand out as true successes, and one of the games to achieve that feat is Royal Revolt 2, which is celebrating 10 years in the mobile gaming scene.

Developed by Upright Games, which hails from Germany, the game has over 40 million downloads to date, which marks it as a successful venture, and still, the game continues to captivate players with its unique take on the tower defense genre. After being into the journey of the development and the new features, I delved down into the birth of the title and then their success mantra, which I am writing this piece to share with you.

The birth of Royal Revolt 2 began with its predecessor

Let me write about the game first. Royal Revolt 2 is a free-to-play strategy, tower defense game where players lead their kingdom to victory by developing offensive battle skills and defensive strategies. We get the chance to build and upgrade their castle, placing obstacles and recruiting units, things like archers, paladins, werewolves, and dragons.

It also has role-playing game features, like forging alliances, taking part in seasonal events, and enhancement items with the Blacksmith. You can also explore a mystical dungeon and unlock powerful troops. With so many elements, it was bound to be successful. However, the success story of Royal Revolt 2 is fostered by its predecessor, Royal Revolt.

This mobile game turned the classic approach to tower defense gameplay upside down and allowed players to attack, work their way through enemy facilities, and breach defensive structures. This approach seemed innovative at the time and only was the next step. The first game was a simpler version of a great idea, created quickly to get a working product that could cover the development costs.

Features that changed the game for Royal Revolt 2

I read the blog of Felix Pietsch, CEO of Upright Games who mentions the way of keeping things interesting with this title, which is by bringing new features.

The major additions include Alliances for teamwork and wars, with also new troops, spells, and obstacles, which require fresh strategies while trying to conquer them. Then there is Conquest Mode, in which alliances fight over territories and vital resources. It brought a twist to the game. The guardian system also came in. That means powerful guardians with unique abilities, which were now introduced in battles.

Also, another reason why the game is popular is that the Royal Revolt 2 keeps players flowing with seasonal events and festivals bringing in boosts, challenges, rewards, and other improvements in the graphics and user interface making the game vivid, more beautiful, and more straightforward to navigate around.

But what I see, another point to highlight is that the developers kind of want to just innovate the current IP, not just with Royal Revolt or its sequel. After 10 years, Royal Revolt will get a new title: Royal Revolt: A Trader’s Tale. The setting this time changes from a hero fighting monsters into a role-playing game where you become a character who is not the hero.

Instead, you play the role of a shopkeeper who collects and trades his way to building the most attractive shop in town. You’ll be tasked with crafting massive items to sell to your customers, waiting for them, and even redefining the Royal Revolt experience through this mode of gameplay, and hence it brings together the players that love the genre.

What is in store for the future of Royal Revolt 2 and its players

With this major milestone of completing 10 years, Royal Revolt 2 joins the list of big names who have already achieved this feat. Madden Mobile, Supercell’s blockbuster title Clash of Clans, My Talking Tom, and Hill Climb Racing to name a few, and all these games are looking forward to another decade of consistent performance, with the audience in its support.

Now, we already know they are celebrating this milestone of the 10th anniversary with the biggest update of the year which was released in March. It had plenty on offer, including a new server launched for the first time.

Once again, this is a huge achievement, and with these updates, the vision is clear for the game; they want to bring in more entertainment.

In the words of Felix himself: “This milestone is not just a celebration of what we’ve achieved but also a commitment to our future. As we look ahead, we’re excited to keep the momentum going, delivering regular updates and innovations that will captivate our players for years to come.”, where his words ensure Royal Revolt 2 continues to thrive in the future.

Of course, now that it’s been 10 years, I might find myself writing another snippet when the Royal Revolt 2 hits 15 or 20 years. For now, again, all eyes are on the developers. Without a doubt, they still have work to do, which is to continue pushing these extravagant updates and get more players on board. The 40 million milestone hopefully reaches 100 million soon, the fans of the genre wish.
