In-Depth Review and Discussion
Cyno has been one of the most anticipated characters in the Genshin Impact community for a while now. He first appeared in the Genshin Impact Webtoon, introducing himself as an Akademia Scholar sent to Mondstadt by Lisa from Sumeru. He played a part (albeit a small one) in helping Collei during the Archon Residue within her and finally whisking her away with him to Sumeru. Coupled with the appearance in the Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview Video of Sumeru, fans awaited his in-game appearance to get a full glimpse of his character and backstory.
Taking place after the events from the last Sumeru Acts (III and IV), the Traveler and Paimon are roped into a case of helping the Matra investigate the smuggling of Canned Knowledge and it was only getting worse since they didn’t have Cyno alongside with them to help with the case.
From the previous Archon quests, we are already acquainted with the knowledge that Cyno has left his position of being the General Mahamatra for the time being and exiled himself to the Desert. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t stop him from his Matra duties then and of course, it doesn’t stop him now seeing as afterwards we run into him investigating the case as well without the Matras and the Akademia knowing.
Cyno and journey along his side
Throughout the story, we team up with Cyno and journey along his side as he shows us the forefront of what a General Mahamatra is capable of. Cyno as a character has a very stoic persona and takes his Matra duties seriously. Having a very intimidating and scary presence, he does not hesitate to serve judgment and punishment to those who deserve it. He sticks by his ideals and principles and never deters away from them, as his close ex-partner, Taj has commented on it as well.
Having said that, Cyno is shown to be very empathetic and kind to others. Despite the threatening exterior, he expresses worry for the Traveler’s safety and offers his utmost protection to them. Similarly, we see his displays of kindness throughout the story, seeing as Cyno shows his concerns for Collei inquiring about her health to Tighnari and likewise promising Bahari that he would aid his sick daughter and keep them from harm’s way from the enemies.
Characterization and involvement of NPCs
The story itself is interesting enough despite having a full NPC cast. The NPCs all played their parts well and the plot itself held out well until the very end. Taj Radkani, Cyno’s ex-partner and somewhat of a close friend of his, and his son Murtada’s whole story felt depressing and sad.
Seeing Taj sacrificing himself in the end for his son and the countless other promising scholars who step foot in the Court of Desolation was truly honorable. Cyno, not letting his death be in vain, did his utmost best to take down the corrupted people in the smuggling case afterward, which he did, proving his efforts were not hopeless.
The quest does a respectable job of balancing both Cyno’s characterization and involvement in the story and the involvement of the NPCs. What’s pitiful in Genshin Impact’s story quests is that almost a lot of the quests are heavily focused and centered on an NPC and their problems, while the actual character that the story quest is supposed to around usually plays a side character role in their plot.
Cyno being directly linked to Taj’s character and the Akademia helped to drive his character development. At the end of the Story Quest, one of the rewards we obtain is Cyno’s briefcase which can be placed in our Serenitea Pot as Furnishing.
