Traditional games such as playing cards were first invented by the Chinese and have been around since as early as AD1000. Amazingly, they’re still popular today with all generations, from older people who fondly remember traditional games from their youth, to today’s younger generations who use them to take part in competitions and challenges. Yet technology has drastically changed the way we can now play traditional games, in that many highly popular casino games can now be played online, without the need to own any specific decks of cards or casino boards. Thanks to technological developments, such games are now available on mobile-friendly sites and downloadable apps, in which graphics, user experience, and loading speeds have all significantly improved since the days of Snake and Tetris. Let’s take a look at some of the latest famous card games that are available to play on your mobile phones.

Famous mobile Card games

1. Uno

Developed in 1971, Uno isn’t one of those card games that’s considered traditional, yet it’s been around for enough decades to become a household game. One of the issues with card games is that sometimes you fancy a game but there’s no one else around to play. 2-4 players can play Online Uno, but if you don’t have anyone to play with then you can play against the AI instead.

The aim of the game in Uno is to get rid of all your cards and this can be done by matching it with the middle card that was placed down before yours. Players who don’t have a matching card must take a penalty card from the pile. However, remember with the online version that you must remember to press one when you have no cards left, otherwise, you’ll be given two penalty points. Good luck!

2. Legends of Runetera

Developed by Riot Games the same people that created League of Legends, this card game is one of the newest picks and features a range of interactive features from social playing options with friends, to leader boards and different cards to collect. While it is played like a traditional card game, players can also benefit from a story mode, which combines elements of both an interactive game and a traditional card game.

For those who like a challenge, it’s also based around skill where players need to build up an idea of what they’re doing in order to be successful. One thing to note is that due to the game being new, it is still going through a number of developments and as a result, can sometimes contain glitches, however, it’s worth checking out. The game recently won the Best Game of 2020 award from non-other than Google Play themselves. You can read our detailed coverage on Legends of Runeterra here.

Certainly not one of the most traditional games, but being a parody of roulette, Exploding Kittens is certainly a lot of fun. The game works by picking cards until one player picks the exploding kitten card, which essentially ends the game.

There are also a number of supporting cards that make the game all the more amusing, including a diffusing card which can be kept to one side in case you’re unlucky enough to pick up the exploding kitten card – a bit like the get out of jail free card in monopoly. Not only is this game a lot more entertaining than traditional roulette, but it also comes with unique artwork, designed by The Oatmeal.
