Clash of Clans General Manager discusses defense merging, TH17 changes, and future plans in October 2024 AMA

Spicy things to come!

Story Highlights
  • Town Hall 17 will introduce significant meta changes.
  • Clash of Clans is planning a rework of hero mechanics, allowing non-upgrading heroes to participate and offering more hero options than available slots.
  • A new ranked system will launch in 2025, addressing issues with the current Legends League setup.

The General Manager of Clash of Clans Stuart McGaw came up with yet another interesting AMA session this October 2024 and players had a good amount of questions asked. There were some interesting details revealed, however, which included the defense merging, TH17 changes, and future plans of the game, which I’ll give you an overview of.

Hard Mode expansion, Defense Merging, and Town Hall 17 Plans

Stuart hinted at significant improvements to the game mechanics. One of the questions was related to the expansion of Hard Mode, where the user asked if Hard Mode expands to Clan War Leagues Champion 1 and Legend League II. Building on its introduction in the June update, Hard Mode will likely be integrated into more game features.

Now, Town Hall 17 remains an interesting topic of discussion in their sessions, and a question arrived with that too. Stuart confirmed that changes to defensive structures are in the works, with Stuart adding that the “meta will change quite a bit”. You can also expect a merging of all Cannons and Archer Towers into Ricochet Cannons and Multi-Archer Towers in the future.

Plans for hero mechanics and ranked play rework

A reworking hero mechanics has been mentioned as well. Stuart shared that the July 2024 Unlimited Heroes event didn’t yield the desired impact, but Clash of Clans is now planning a new system that will allow non-upgrading heroes to participate in battles when they add more heroes in future the system. Also, you’ll have more hero options than slots you can fill.

Stuart also revealed plans to rework ranked play next year in 2025. The current Legends League setup has proven to be not so beneficial for both competitive players and those farming casually. The new ranked system aims to offer a better balance between competition and casual play, though specifics are still in discussion.

Account security improvements and future updates

Clash of Clans continued its focus on improving account security. Recent improvements to Supercell ID include better notification systems for email changes and an easy account recovery process, helping reduce phishing risks. Support tickets are now processed 20% faster, with recovery-related tickets seeing a 66% improvement in handling time.

While some features like the Clan Capital and Builder Base will not see updates this year alongside the Super Troops, other game areas will be seeing improvements. The focus is on the 50-person single-clan experience improvements, and while there were requests to provide sneak peeks into the upcoming TH17, Stuart decided to maintain the surprise element.
