EA is looking for a merger with another company, according to reports

The video game giant is trying to consolidate its assets with big corporations!

Electronic Arts, also known as EA, is reportedly looking for a merger or an acquisition deal from entertainment conglomerates like Disney and Amazon. EA is a big name in the gaming industry and has been developing blockbuster games, since the turn of the century. Their most popular game franchise is the all-time favorite, the FIFA series, which has sold millions of copies around the world.

Recently, Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision and Sony’s acquisition of Bungie seem to be one of the reasons, why EA wants to strike a deal with a big company. Electronic Arts (EA) owns many developers and gaming properties, from sports titles like Madden NFL and FIFA to BioWare-developed RPGs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Currently, the video game publisher is going through a volatile phase after losing or abandoning some of its biggest third-party licenses like FIFA and Star Wars. Most recently, the company announced that it would be ending its 10-year-long deal with FIFA and rebrand the whole franchise in 2023.

EA’s lookout for a merger: More details

The report has been published by a news outlet named Puck. According to the report, Electronic Arts is having conversations with some of the tech industry’s largest companies regarding the possibility of a sale or merger. Apple, Amazon, Comcast-NBCUniversal, and Disney are heading the list of partners with whom EA wants to consolidate its business. Additionally, the report explains that Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard “emboldened” the company to seek out possible partners to purchase it.

The report has not mentioned all the nitty-gritty details, but it mentioned that a deal did move forward with Comcast-NBCUniversal at one point. The deal included Comcast-NBCUniversal spinning off the NBCUniversal media portion of the company, to merge with Electronic Arts. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts‘ family was in line to gain majority control of the new company, while EA CEO Andrew Wilson would stay on, to guide the new ship. The report mentioned that the deal didn’t go through due to price and corporate structure post-merger.

EA is still exploring further options to merge

From this latest report, it can be said that Electronic Arts will continue to explore the possibility of being acquired or merging with another company, after this setback. Earlier this February, EA CEO Andrew Wilson indicated that his company was looking to expand even further by acquiring more studios.
