There was high drama outside miHoYo’s headquarters in Shanghai on April 24 as an unnamed individual for an alleged murder attempt on the founders of MiHoYo, developers of the smash hit gacha game Genshin Impact. The individual was reported to be carrying a knife and was arrested at the scene. Fortunately, there seem to have been no casualties or injuries reported from the incident. According to multiple reports, the accused was dissatisfied with the controversial content released by miHoYo in Honkai Impact 3rd as a part of their recent anniversary update.
Dissatisfaction around recent Honkai Impact update
Although MiHoYo received worldwide fame for their work on the recently released gacha impact, the assassination attempt is supposedly linked to a recent update for Honkai Impact 3rd, an action role-playing video game also developed by MiHoYo and released for Android, iOS as well as Microsoft Windows devices.
Honkai Impact 3rd releases updates for both Chinese Servers and global servers on a separate basis, with both sets of player bases receiving more or less the same rewards that are, until now. In a recent special anniversary event that was made exclusive only for global players. This enraged players from China, with many calling the move “disrespectful” and “discriminatory” for Chinese audiences. The outrage was such that the reviews of the game began to drop drastically, with many fans giving 1-star reviews on BiliBili in what has been termed as a “review bomb”.
Although the rewards were later made available for Chinese players, the controversy didn’t stop there as some players pointed out the inappropriate nature of dances related to the Bunny girl designs in the event which led to the content being rollbacked. MiHoYo also gave away 500 free in-game crystals to all Honkai Impact 3rd players in a further attempt to appease the fans. Although MiHoYo released an apology on the game’s official Twitter page, the attempted assassination is another case in a series of extreme violence by certain “fans” against game developers over certain issues pertaining to a game.
