It has beaten the likes of Fortnite, GTA!

Genshin Impact, the open-world adventure RPG game developed by miHoYo, has been garnering fan praise for its engaging storyline and AAA-quality open-world scenery. The game though free-to-play has constantly maintained the top positions on the list of highest-grossing games every month and was the top grosser for September. According to a report from SensorTower, Genshin Impact has become the highest-grossing game for the first year of all time, beating the likes of Fortnite, GTA, etc.

Genshin’s gacha mechanic: The prime source of the game revenue

The revenue comes from the game’s gacha mechanic, by selling new characters and their constellations along with weapons. The game also features its version of a battle pass and with Patch 1.6 players got the opportunity to buy cosmetics for Jean and Barbara with more skins expected to come in the upcoming patches.

On its journey to become the highest-grossing game for the first year, Genshin Impact has not had it easy. Despite being one of the most downloaded mobile games in its first year, it has been up for controversy, since it was first released in September last year. The first year anniversary saw massive outrage from fans of the game and also suggestively led to a loss in active player-base. Although, it seems that the hindrance has not stopped it from becoming the most successful game in Year 1 on the basis of revenue.

Genshin Impact: The first year revenue crosses the likes of Fornite, GTA 5

Genshin Impact is a cross-platform game that is compatible with PC, PlayStation, and mobile. Therefore, its revenue is expected to be massive in comparison to single platform games but astonishingly the mobile-only revenue is also a massive 2.1 Billion US dollars. Genshin Impact, currently also holds the record for fastest mobile title to cross the 1 billion dollar mark.

The open-world game has amassed 2.3 to 3.5 Billion USD based on estimates as reported by a detailed post on pastebin. The lower estimate is based on the assumption that 90% of the revenue comes from mobile and the higher end assumes that 60% of the earnings are from mobile. Both the estimates exclude third-party android purchases made in China. The amount is a whopping 1 Billion more than Fortnite’s first-year numbers, which clearly is a testament to Gensin Impact’s success.

With more regions, story and characters to come Genshin Impact fans have a lot of content to cover in the near future which holds miHoYo’s game in good stead as it enters the second year and a peek at Hu Tao’s rerun banner revenue will reveal that the game is reaching new heights of success.
