Out of the seven elements in Genshin Impact, Geo is the most underrepresented. Only three event-exclusive 5* characters wield a Geo Vision, and the first two of them, Zhongli and Albedo, were released back in version 1.1 and 1.2 respectively. Both of them played the role of supporting characters. The last event-exclusive Geo 5* character was Arataki Itto, who joined the playable roster in version 2.3 and was the first Geo main DPS character. Now, players are asking HoYoverse to add more Geo Characters in Genshin Impact.
As for 4* Geo characters, Noelle and Ningguang have been playable since version 1.0, while Gorou and Yun Jin joined the roster in version 2.3 and 2.4 respectively. Excluding the Geo Traveller, these are all the Geo characters in Genshin Impact.
Lack of Geo Characters and the imminent problem with the Geo element
The first few Geo characters, Noelle, Ningguang, Zhongli, and Albedo were all designed to be supports. Noelle functions as a hybrid shielder and healer while Ningguang functions mainly as a burst DMG support. Zhongli provided the strongest shield in the entire game, completely removing the need to dodge. Albedo is an off-field support who deals Geo DMG to enemies within a circle when they take DMG of any kind.
This, combined with Albedo is very easy to build making him a very accessible off-field support. Zhongli and Albedo have great synergy with each other since both of them can provide off-field DMG. So far, Genshin Impact does not have a decent main DPS character from the Geo element.
All that changed with the release of Arataki Itto and his dedicated support, Gorou. Gorou buffs DEF and Geo DMG in general. Itto scales off DEF and infuses his attacks with Geo during burst mode. This made Itto and Gorou have a great synergy. Albedo’s off-field Geo DMG also scales off DEF, so he also synergizes well with Gorou.
Zhongli shreds enemies’ resistance against all elements, his shield increases all DMG and shreds Geo resistance thanks to Geo Resonance. All these factors combined to make Itto-Gorou-Albedo-Zhongli a really powerful team known as Mono-Geo. The only problem is that these characters have this level of amazing synergy only with themselves.
The real problem with the Geo element’s lack of synergy with other elements is the lack of offensive reactions. Geo only has one reaction called Crystalize, which creates a really weak shield. The strength of this shield scales off EM, and no Geo character is built with EM since they scale off DEF or HP. Crystalize shields are incredibly weak and completely unreliable for protection against DMG. Geo’s lacking offensive reactions, combined with the fact that Gorou is such a great buffer for Geo DMG, makes it seem like Geo is being shaped to be an element that only has any real synergy with itself.
Players have complained about the lack of new Geo character for over a year
The only Geo character who synergizes well with non-Geo characters is Yun Jin, who is also the last playable Geo character to be released. She buffs normal attacks and synergizes with Kamiyato Ayato and Yoimiya. In a way, Yun Jin’s functionality does not come from her element, but rather from how her kit works. She could belong to any element and it would not change anything about her normal attack buff.
A Genshin player has noticed that it has been almost an entire year since the last time a new Geo character was released. The Reddit post reached over 3.4k upvotes and players in the comments pointed out that Geo is so underrepresented that there are no Geo characters in the Standard Wish – Wanderlust Invocation.
Final Thoughts
Genshin Impact is constantly expanding its playable roster with new characters. The newly added playable element, Dendro is gaining new characters faster than Geo. Even sadder still, none of the upcoming characters that have been announced belong to the Geo element. Geo is going to end up being the only element that has seen no expansions in the roster in over a year.
