The renowned auto game developer Hutch behind Top Drives has released Top Drives: 5 Years In The Making, a new short film that traces the development of the popular mobile card battler to celebrate its 5th anniversary.
The short film details how Top Drives was developed and gives insights from key creative minds behind the game
The short film, which was unveiled at the 2023 London Games Festival during an open studio event at Hutch’s Shoreditch headquarters, describes how Top Drives was created from the perspective of the development team. The short film depicts the title’s ever-changing nature and the effects of fostering an initially small but devoted community from its humble beginnings as a simple interactive spreadsheet to today amusing over 104,000 daily active members.
The documentary offers a candid look at the frequently difficult process of building a successful mobile game. It includes development insights from important creative minds behind the game, including Jonathan Alpine (Chief Creative Officer), Tim Mannveille (Chief Product Officer), Ian Griffiths (Game Director), and others.
“Nobody at Hutch could have guessed where we are now in the early days of the game. Even at times, the possibility of forcing Hutch into bankruptcy kept us up at night,” said Jonathan Alpine, Chief Creative Officer at Hutch. He further stated, “But Top Drives has achieved breakthrough success as a result of both the team’s ingenuity and the fantastic community that supports the game.”
Top Drives, now in its fifth year, continues to be one of Hutch’s top games, thanks in part to its wide and constantly expanding selection of around 4,000 licensed vehicles from automakers including Mustang, Porsche, Audi, McLaren, Bugatti, and Mercedes.
