Niantic to shut down CATAN: World Explorers by November

Players can transfer the remaining in-game currencies to Pokémon GO

Niantic has announced that it will not continue its massively multiplayer location-based adventure reality game CATAN: World Explorers anymore. CATAN: World Explorers will watch its end on November 18th, 2021, at 7 am UTC, well, the news on a complete shutdown or not is unknown. The publisher will take down the game from the App Store today and any in-game transaction will be halted from now. However, to make it a happy ending, Niantic plans to increase the bonuses the most of the remaining weeks.

The reason behind the halt

Failing to adopt such a well-designed board game to a global, location-based Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game sparked the decision to scrap it. After a year of spending as a beta since pre-registration, the announcement regarding the discontinuation of the game come out today. The team behind this game thanked everyone for the support over the year and promised to bring some more exciting titles in the future.

About CATAN: World Explorers

The game was announced in October 2019 during SPIEL 2019 in Essen. CATAN – World Explorers was soft-launched in New Zealand in early July 2020. In September 2020, Switzerland got early access to the game, and it was made available in Australia, Denmark, and Singapore in October that year.

The game features harvesting, trading, and building in the real world as cities and landmarks transform into settlements where players can collect resources, construct buildings, and score points for their Faction. The game lets players socialize with each other where the players are known as Catanians. By doing all these tasks, players will earn victory points to help their Factions to make a place on the world leaderboard.

What the Niantic team said

We’re so proud of the game we made, however, we got a little too complicated and a little too far from the original CATAN game. The work and knowledge that we learned working on this game is not lost and we’re already working hard on more games for the future.

The game will let players spend the remaining currency before the closure. The prices of items in the shop will be reduced a lot so that players can enjoy the balance for the next few months. Another great initiative the team has taken is that if a player wants to use the remaining currency in Pokémon GO, they can contact the support before November 1st.
