- Russia restricted Discord due to crypto scams, criminal activities, and illegal content.
- Turkey restricted Discord due to allegations of child abuse, blackmail, and online harassment.
Turkey and Russia have imposed a ban on Discord for not cooperating with local authorities. Turkey banned Discord shortly after Russia’s Roskomnadzor blocked the platform for failing to comply with Russian law.
Turkey banned Discord for not complying with a court order to share information related to criminal activities
Turkey banned the popular communication platform Discord for not following the court’s order to share information regarding criminal activities and child abuse. Turkish authorities have claimed that crimes of child abuse, blackmail, and online harassment were committed on the platform.
According to Reuters, the ban was implemented amid public outrage following the murder of two women by a 19-year-old man in Istanbul earlier this month, with reports suggesting that content on Discord had praised the violence.
Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc shared a statement on X regarding the ban. He reinforced the government’s position on the online safety of the citizens, highlighting the need to protect children from harmful content.
Russia banned Discord for violating local legislation
Russia’s communication regulator, Roskomnadzor has also restricted the platform for violating local legislation, following a $36,000 fine issued to the San Francisco-based company for allegedly violating Russian law.
Discord previously failed to remove 1000 items that were considered illegal in Russia, leading the government to block the platform’s access completely. They also failed to remove banned content from their platform.
There were also numerous crypto scams taking place on the platform alongside all the child abuse allegations. The platform has also been actively used during the war in Ukraine, much like Telegram.
Both Russia and Ukraine have previously restricted numerous platforms for security reasons. For instance, Turkey slapped a ban on Roblox recently, while Russia imposed sanctions on Microsoft and Avast and blocked Signal for anti-terrorist operations.
