Turkey has surprisingly put up a ban on the popular online gaming platform Roblox from this Wednesday, 7th of August 2024.
The ban comes a few days after Turkey imposed a nationwide block on Instagram
The official site displays the platform being blocked with the decision being made by the Adana 6th Criminal Court of Peace, as reported on the website of Turkey’s telecommunications authority.
Roblox is an online platform that allows users to create, share, and play games created by other users. Ever since its launch in 2006, it has grown significantly in popularity, particularly among younger audiences. Most developers are provided with the opportunity to design their games using the Roblox Studio, and with the ban, this might be a problem.
This move comes shortly after the country’s previous ban on Instagram. On August 2, 2024, Turkey imposed a ban on the social media platform which was enforced under BTK’s discretion while it deemed it “unlawful” and violates the constitution.
The recent ban on Roblox in Turkey has made a lot of people upset and worried as expected. Many players love using Roblox for fun and creativity, and now they can’t access it. As per the discussion in the community, the players are also afraid that other websites and apps might get banned next.
Increasing sexual content targeting Kids might have been a reason for Roblox’s ban
There can be several reasons why Roblox might have been banned. There are many reports of sexual content targeting children and virtual spaces allegedly being exploited by pedophiles were significant factors in this move. While this has been the bigger issue, there are more other reasons you could list.
The misuse of Roblox’s virtual currency, robux, to lure children into risky activities further fueled the ban. Additionally, Turkey pointed to the platform’s insufficient content regulation, highlighting the challenges in monitoring and controlling inappropriate material. This combination of issues led to the nationwide ban as authorities prioritized child safety.
Some are even talking about protesting and using VPNs to get around the ban. Well, one could understand the reason behind the blocking of Instagram in the country, but a platform like Roblox which is known for its low levels of hate or negativity is surprising, surely.
