Recently after the announcement of the debut of MPL in Brazil, Mobile Legends has also expanded its professional Esports league to another Asian country of Cambodia. Moonton has announced the Season 1 of MPL Cambodia, which will be sponsored by Smart. Cambodia has been a long-time participant in regional and international tournaments like MSC and M2 World Championship. They are typically represented by Impunity KH. It seems like MLBB is looking to cultivate new and upcoming esports players not only from powerhouses like Indonesia and the Philippines but from other promising countries as well.
History of Cambodia and Mobile Legends Esports
Cambodia, popularly known as the KH region, has been participating in the ML Esports scene for quite some time. Dating back to the start in 2019, the MLBB World Championship Qualifiers were held to determine a team to represent Cambodia at the M1 World Championship. That qualifier alone boasted more than 37 thousand hours of games time with a mere 13-hour air time, a significant start for a small market. Impunity KH, one of the largest Cambodian ML teams, participated in MSC 2021, where they had a magnificent game against Indonesia’s Bigetron Alpha, winning in a 2-1 upset against the Indonesian runner-up team. That match sported a hefty 800 thousand peak viewers.
The MLBB EFC Sankranta Cup was recently held in Cambodia. Here, a total of 242 thousand hours of game time was spent, having an amount of 22 hours of air time. These micro-tournaments gave recognition to Impunity KH at both regional and international levels, attracting viewers and potential fans to the all-new MPL Cambodia.
What is next for Mobile Legends MPL
With Moonton looking to expand its professional league to more countries, its MLBB market will gradually grow. With this idea, players will emerge, more live streams and tournaments will create a ton of traffic directed only to Mobile Legends. The fans can definitely expect to see countries like Japan, Russia, Vietnam, Thailand, etc. get their very own MPL soon.
