Microsoft, along with its $68.7 billion acquisition Activision, has been making some interesting developments lately, as it appears they’ve teamed up to develop ‘AA’ games based on existing IPs within the Blizzard universe of games.
Microsoft’s strategy is to create games with smaller teams and lower budgets
First reported by Windows Central, many King employees have updated their LinkedIn profiles to show their new roles at Blizzard recently. Until or unless there are other works in hand, this internal moving seems unlikely. Microsoft plans to use its extensive collection of franchises, gained from the Activision-Blizzard acquisition, to develop these new games.
If you recall, the Activision Blizzard acquisition has boosted Microsoft Gaming, partly due to its strong mobile game presence with titles like Call of Duty: Mobile and Candy Crush Saga from King. Add Blizzard into the mix, you have World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo franchise to work on. So we can say, a very interesting lineup of IPs to feature on mobile.
From the report’s sources, it seems that Microsoft’s strategy is to create games with smaller, more agile teams, while also keeping an eye on cutting down on the high costs of AAA game development. They took inspiration from the success of Sea of Thieves, a game made by a small team that became one of Xbox’s most profitable titles.
Microsoft is looking at having studios work more closely together as a way to cut costs by bringing smaller teams into the larger organization. With the debut of the Xbox Mobile Gaming App Store inching closer, Microsoft aims to feature its top-chart games, and teaming up with Activision to develop ‘AA’ games from the Blizzard universe is a smart move, and something fans would love too.
