Genshin Impact: Chart Reveals Constellation Ownership Rates of the Chinese player base

Over 1 Million Data Points

A Genshin Impact player called u/dhcwsp posted a chart on the r/Genshin_Impact subreddit that represents data on the constellation ownership rates of individual characters. This data was collected by WeChat Genshin Helper and the data belongs to the Chinese player base. This data is pretty statistically significant since it uses a large sample size of over 1 million. This article will try to explain the charts and the information they represent.

Genshin Impact Constellation Ownership Rates

5* constellation ownership (percentages)

This data represents the percentage of players that own constellations of a character vs the number of players that own the character.  Not everyone that owns a character owns their constellations too, especially for 5* characters.

The blue bar represents how many people who submitted their data own a certain 5* at C0. We can see Aloy has a 100% C0 ownership rate since she was given away for free and she has no constellations. Going up from Aloy, we see the bar broken into several colors denoting how many people own a certain constellation of that 5*. This data is cumulative. If a player owns C3 then they also own C2 and C1 as well.

This chart shows that most people stop after getting C2 of 5* characters. This is because most 5* characters have a huge power spike at C2 and then the rest of their constellations may or may not be useful. At least for free-to-play players, it is not worth going past C2.

We can see that many people own C2 and C3 of Raiden Shogun. These are her best constellations and given how frequently she has reruns, it is possible for dedicated free-to-plays to get her constellations. We can also see that out of everyone, Hu Tao has the highest percentage of C1 owners. This is because her C1 is a game-changer for her charged-attack-reliant gameplay. We can also see the C6 ownership rates, Yelan, Arataki Itto, and Yae Miko are above everyone else. This is because these 3 characters have the best C6 in Genshin Impact.

4* constellation ownership (percentages)

This data represents the percentage of players that own constellations of a character vs the number of players that own the character. This graph looks the exact opposite of the 5* counterpart because 4* characters have a lower rarity and getting their C6 is not that difficult.

It is astonishing to see that Kujou Sara has the highest C6 ownership. The explanation is simple, she is a niche support for Raiden Shogun and their banners always run together. Raiden Shogun is one of the most owned characters and players obtain Kujou Sara’s constellations while pulling for Raiden Shogun.

This data represents the percentage of players that own a particular 5* constellation vs the number of players that owns the character. It is no surprise that Hu Tao C1 is above everyone else, because of how game-changing it is as mentioned before. Yelan C1 is a great Quality of Life improvement and Raiden Shogun C2 is the largest power spike from C0 in the entire game.

C6 5* ownership (percentages)

This data represents the percentage of players that own the C6 of a character vs the number of people that own the character. Yelan’s C6 makes her the most broken character in the entire game, in terms of raw DMG. She can destroy any opponent that is not immune to Hydro, and she can do it all alone without any support. It comes as no surprise that C6 Yelan has the highest ownership rate.

A very similar thing can be said about Arataki Itto and Yae Miko’s C6. They are both incredibly broken at C6, albeit not to the level of C6 Yelan. A very interesting outlier in this graph is Dehya. Most characters in this graph have absolutely busted C6, but Dehya is actually really bad even with C6. However, a lot of players (whales and free-to-play both) were excited about her release and pulled for her regardless of her power level. After all, personal attachment is one of the things that entice players to pull for a character.

5* constellation ownership (raw counts)

This data represents the raw number of 5* constellation ownership. It disregards the number of people who actually own the character. This graph shows that Zhongli is the character that most people own. It’s pretty understandable since he makes every combat encounter easy.

Raiden Shogun, Kaedehara Kazuha, and Kamisato Ayaka are right below Zhongli in terms of being the most owned character. This is because these 3 are among the best main DPS/sub-DPS, support/sub-DPS, and main DPS, respectively.

This data represents the number of people that own a certain 5* character at C6. Without a doubt, Yelan is the best character for C6 due to the reasons mentioned before. This graph reflects this fact. Kamisato Ayaka and Raiden Shogun are not characters that need to be C6 for their maximum potential. Their best constellations are C4 and C2/C3 respectively. Probably the reason people C6 them is due to personal attachment.

This data represents the number of people that own a certain constellation of a 5* character. Again, Hu Tao C1 and Raiden Shogun C2 have the highest ownership count due to the reasons mentioned before.

Genshin Impact Constellation Ownership Rates Normalised data

The previous graphs were based on players who submitted their character builds, not all characters are reported. The WeChat Genshin Helper also collects Abyss Usage data which includes data about ownership that players did not report. The following graphs are generated after normalizing the data using Abyss Usage rates.

The non-normalised version implied Zhongli was the most owned character, this version reveals that it is actually Raiden Shogun. It’s pretty understandable since she is more versatile and has multiple viable playstyles.

Nahida C6 was not this high on the non-normalised version. The rest of the graph is very similar.

This data is very similar to the non-normalized version.

Final thoughts

This data was very useful for us to visualise the appeal and usefulness of characters in Genshin Impact. A general trend that is observed is that most players make the smart decision to stop at C1 or C2 since that is where most 5* characters’ true strength lies. C6 might be the maximum potential of 5* characters but the difference between C2 and C6 vs the cost associated with it makes it unjustifiable.

Another trend is that while players prefer comfort (Hu Tao C1) and power (Yelan C6) over everything else, there are players who will pull constellations based on personal attachment (unusually high ownership rate of Dehya C6). This trend is also observable with Raiden Shogun whose C6 does not offer a significant enough increase in DMG over her C2/C3, but players chose to C6 her anyway. Same with Kamisato Ayaka.

The last thing to note is that this data belongs to the Chinese player base, these graphs may look different for the international player base. The Chinese player base is generally more META-oriented and they also contain the most number of whales (which contributes to the high ownership of Dehya despite her kit being bad even at C6).
