Blastoise, the Water-type Kanto starter from Generation is a playable character in the Pokémon Unite MOBA. Anime fans would never forget the legendary battle between Gary’s Blastoise and Ash’s Charizard in the Kanto League. It starts as a Squirtle, then evolves into Wartortle, and finally Blastoise. It plays the role of a long-ranged defender and belongs to the S-tier. Handling it does not require many struggles, as its moves are somewhat user-friendly to some extent to control. The moves referred to, are majorly hindrance moves that help in keeping out the opponents. In this guide, we will let you know all about Blastoise in Pokémon Unite, its abilities, best items, and team compositions.

Pokémon Unite Blastoise movesets
Blastoise’s high endurance and support make it a perfect team-man. A defender, which should always accompany any other Pokémon, does require much endurance to the least. The moves are also destined to keep away the opponents, be it from the goals or boss fights.

The skill becomes a boosted attack with every third attack, dealing continual damage, and decreasing the opponent’s movement speed for a short time. After Blastoise’ boosted attack, the cooldown of other moves is reduced.

Best items for Blastoise in Pokémon Unite
Our Pokémon Unite guide would now discuss the best items for Blastoise, the defender in the following section.
Best Held Items
Item(s) | Why it’s useful |
---|---|
Focus Band | When the Pokémon is on low HP, this item restores the HP which it has lost at 8% of HP lost, per second, for 3 seconds. This would particularly be very beneficial for this Pokémon since it would have to face more damage being a defender. |
Aeos Cookie | When the holder would score a goal, its max. HP would increase by 200. |
Leftovers | Since Blastoise is a defensive Pokémon, it is always susceptible to more damage. This is where this item comes in handy. Holding this item restores a portion of Pokémon’s HP every second when it is not in any combat. |
Besides the above-suggested builds, a Blastoise player may also use the following item builds:
- Focus Band, Assault Vest, Rocky Helmet
- Focus Band, Buddy Barrier, Score Shield
- Aeos Cookie, Leftovers, Score Shield
Best Battle Items
- Potion: Restores a bit of HP of the Pokemon. A defender like Blastoise would surely find it beneficial, as it is likely to receive a lot of damage.
- Slow Smoke: Puts up a smokescreen that decreases the movement speed and standard attack speed of all enemy Pokemon in a wide area. It would help Blastoise to steal time and crowd control while defending goals.
Pokémon Unite Blastoise Gameplay Tips
Blastoise is a ranged defender. Though its moves deal considerably less damage, they are excellent crowd controllers. Most of the moves either disable or push opponents away. In the following section, we have discussed Blastoise’s early and late gameplay.
Early Game
Initially, as a Squirtle, the options are either Skull Bash or Water Gun. Water Gun can be an excellent choice for defending goals early on, as it pushes away the opponents. Skull Bash besides doing damage, can also be used as a dash move for retreating or closing in on opponents. Players must prioritise levelling up as soon as possible, as the tankier form of a defender won’t come in before reaching higher levels.

Upon reaching level 5, both Wartortle and an Upgrade of Water Gun are available. Players must select Hydro Pump for a more defensive build. It has a similar function to that of Water Gun, only with higher damage. The Water Spout is a good choice for boss fights or team fights, as it deals continued damage over time.
Late Game
Upon reaching Level 7, Skull Bash can be upgraded to either Surf or Rapid Spin. Surf can be another useful move for crowd control and defending goals. With Rapid Spin, it becomes almost immune to hindrances, while dealing damage, as a basic attack is used. Surf would be our recommendation, as while defending, it would be really beneficial.

The Unite move Hydro Typhoon can have a massive impact while defending in team fights. In the final stretch, players must focus upon defending solely. They must stand on the springboard near the home base and look at which goal has been attacked. Players must quickly spring to that location and defend by killing time and sweeping enemies away with Surf and/or Hydro Cannon. They should not prioritize the Zapdos fight, not at all, if one has to venture alone.
Positioning of Blastoise
The best lane for Blastoise is either the top or bottom. Defenders are meant to accompany attackers or any other Pokémon for taking up the damage, hence jungling would be a waste of its quality.
Blastoise with other Pokémon
Our Pokémon Unite guide will also look at the combination of Blastoise with other Pokémon during Unite battles.
Best synergies with Blastoise
Pokemon | Synergy benefits |
---|---|
Cramorant | Blastoise can help Cramorant, which can set up its Unite move. Besides, it would take up the damage for Cramorant very much, while attacking alongside it. |
Wigglytuff | Wigglytuff’s immobilizing moves and shielding abilities would help Blastoise. |
Charizard | A melee-type allrounder can perfectly synergize with your Blastoise too. This combination can be perfect while attacking opposing goals. |
Pokemon which are strong and weak against Blastoise
Pokemon that Blastoise counters | Pokemon that counter Blastoise |
---|---|
Mamoswine | Garchomp |
Decidueye | Lucario |
Pikachu | Slowbro |
Sylveon | Greninja |
Gardevoir | Dragonite |
Pokémon Unite Blastoise: Tips, tricks and strategies
This guide will also discuss some tips and tricks for playing the defensive Blastoise in Pokémon Unite.
- Skull Bash can play the role of a dash retreat in the initial stages.
- Players must use Slow Smoke and Water Spout together for a more effective move.
- Using Rapid Spin resets its alternative move’s cooldown. When in enemy territory, players must use basic attacks and Hydro Cannon/ Water Spout for additional damage.
- When battling Rotom, one must sweep and corner it to the own side with Surf or Hydro Cannon, and then attack it. This cannot be done with Drednaw.
- If the team decision is to desperately attack Zapdos, players must use the hindrance moves to keep enemies away from the scene and not attack Zapdos themselves.
- Blastoise’s Unite move knocks enemies up in a wide range. So, they can position yourself in the middle of the Zapdos area to disable the whole enemy team. This deals damage and throw opponents together like this.
- Lastly, players should keep in mind that Blastoise being a defender, is meant for either defending goals, or partnering up with others to take up damage or hinder opponents. Therefore, he must be played accordingly.
Final Thoughts
Blastoise may not be the best, but, surely is a decent defender choice in the MOBA. Players must keep in mind the role of the Pokémon and the tips given to us to be a Blastoise master in no time.
