One of the best strategies one can do in League of Legends Wild Rift right from the very start of the game is knowing which champion to pick in which situation. Depending on the enemy champion that will go against you in your lane, one can gain an advantage even before the game starts by picking a champion that is naturally stronger than the one the enemy picked. It is called counter-picking and it will give you a massive advantage that you can exploit when the game starts. In this Wild Rift guide, we will be discussing various ways which aid in counter-picking a player that is foolish enough to blindly pick his/her champion in the champion selection. We will also learn about different aspects of counter-picking in Wild Rift. Let’s get into it!
Elements of Counter-picking
Champion Kit and mechanics
A champion kit refers to its abilities and how they work. To explain it, some champion’s design can work extremely well and horribly bad, depending on who it is against. Using this to advantage is a knowledge that every player needs to climb in rank and win more games. This is what every player should know.

A simple example would be counter-picking a Baron Lane bruiser Wild Rift champion like Darius who relies on sticking on his targets, with a champion that has a ranged advantage like Kennen. The range advantage makes it easy for the player to sneak in auto-attacks in between farming which will soften up his health. Therefore, one can eventually go for an all-in trade and kill him in a 1v1 scenario. In this case, the laning phase of Darius will be much harder to play and survive than it will be for Kennen. One should be able to come out of it with a significant advantage over the opponent.
General Counters
Besides a champion’s kit, there are other game elements that can potentially counter another champion. In this section of the guide, we will discuss general counters that players can use to win more and make games easier. They are likes of Crowd Control, Items & Enchantments, and Summoner Spells. They can be pretty self-explanatory but for a detailed explanation regarding the said topics, look further into the guide.
1. Crowd Control
Commonly termed as CC, Crowd Control is a blanket term used in League of Legends: Wild Rift to describe abilities or spells that remove or diminish the control a target unit has over aspects of itself. This is such as being able to cast spells or initiate movement commands. As crowd controls impact a unit’s combat ability, they are essentially more specialized forms of debuffs. There are many forms of crowd control with common ones such as stuns and slows, and rarer ones like blinds.

In case, one is wondering how crowd controls can potentially counter champions, some champions are capable of popping off and dealing so much in just a short amount of time, but are easily punished by crowd control. An example would be Katarina, she can do so much in a short amount of time. But her ultimate can be easily shut down with a stun. There are also some champions who heavily rely on using basic attacks like Draven. They can be easily countered by blinds.
2. Items and Enchantments
The second on the list is none other than items. As you know, items play a huge role on Wild Rift for several reasons, including how they make a champion significantly stronger in terms of their damage and durability. When it comes to countering champions, items are one of the main factors.

To explain this, we will give a few examples. Firstly, most champions heavily rely on a certain form of damage which is either AD (Attack Damage) or AP (Ability Power). Meanwhile, these damages are reduced by Armor and Magic Resistance respectively. Secondly, some champions have strong and natural healing on their kit, including Dr. Mundo. However, there are items that are designed to weaken any form of healing which is called grievous wounds.
This type of debuff can be found in certain items such as Mortal Reminder, Thornmail, and Morellonomicon. Thirdly, there are some items such as Frozen Heart, which slows the attack speed on an area around the player. Randuin’s Omen, which specifically reduces damage from critical hits, and Phantom Dancer, which gives a shield when reaching low health to counter assassins and burst damage. There are more into it but if the player is looking for more, one must make sure to check out our itemization guide.
3. Summoner Spells
The third and final thing to be mentioned on the list under General Counters are summoner spells. Let’s be real here, summoner spells are pretty self-explanatory. However, lots of players don’t realize that summoner spells are situational, and interchanging them will definitely help in winning more games. This is more important for Baron and Mid laners since their 1v1 lane is very matchup-dependent.

To explain these further, we will mention some of the summoner spells and how they counter certain champions. Exhaust is a summoner spell that slows and reduces damage on a targeted champion, this is especially effective against assassins and marksman champions that can be shut down for a while when used. Ignite is another one, which gives grievous wounds which are as mentioned before, counters healing. Additionally, it is not always necessary to get Flash + Summoner Spell of choice all of the time, mix the summoner spells, experiment with them, and find out about them further yourself!
Playing around Weaknesses
As mentioned before, every champion has a kit. The thing is that a champion’s kit may provide a lot. However, it is certain that it will miss on some aspects, these are called weaknesses. A good player will make use of this to his/her advantage, or in other words to counter the enemy matchup.

To give a few examples, there are champions that do not have any form of sustain. This means that they are more punished by trades and especially poke. Also, there are a number of champions that are immobile. This means that gap closing abilities will be very against them and hitting them with abilities is much easier.
