The Eye of Twilight is here to maintain balance on the Rift!

Tanks are very valuable in any sort of MOBA. They act as protectors, frontliners, and engagers. Shen is one such amazing champion. He is a solid tank and is mainly seen playing in Baron Lane. Though, he can also be a support, if the team needs tank support. He is a very reliable champion and is good in almost all situations. In this Wild Rift guide, we will take a look at the best emblem, spell, and builds, including tips and tricks to dominate every game with Shen.

We also have previously discussed how to master playing with LoL Wild Rift champions like Ammu, Master Yi, Jinx, Braum, Dr. Mundo, Akali, Yasuo, Singed, Jax, Darius, Ashe, Lulu, Varus, Tristana, Kennen, Miss Fortune, Blitzcrank, Teemo, Xayah, Rakan, Corki, Shyvana, Janna, Katarina, Leona, Pantheon, Diana, Galio, Fiora, Rammus, Sona, Kai’Sa, Rengar, Kha’Zix, Nasus, Renekton, Irelia, Riven, Nami, Soraka, Graves, Senna, Lucian, Akshan, Thresh, Seraphine, Vayne, Ezreal, Ahri, Draven, Brand, Nunu and Willump, Lux, Veigar, Caitlyn, Morgana, Kayle, Sett, Yuumi and Alistar. So, players must make sure to check these champion guides as well. For now, let’s focus on this guide of Shen in Wild Rift.

Skill Analysis

Shen, just like Malphite, Alistar, Braum, etc, is a beefy tank. But, along with that, he is also a bruiser/fighter. This means, he can do decent damage in teamfights, and can also soak a ton of damage coming his way. He has one of the best defensive abilities in the game, and he is also a high-utility champion. What makes him so high utility? Well, we’re glad that players have this question. In this Shen guide, we are going to see how her abilities in LoL Wild Rift work and when you should use which skill to be in the best shape in the current ranked season.

Passive – Ki Barrier

When Shen casts any of his four abilities, he gets a shield that absorbs 60 damage (60 + 14% of Shen’s bonus health). He gains this shield for 2.5 seconds after completing an ability. If the ability affects at least one champion, the cooldown of Ki Barrier reduces by 4 seconds, going from reactivating in 10 seconds to reactivating in 6 seconds. Therefore, one must make sure to use the abilities as frequently as possible, and whenever one can, make sure the abilities hit at least one champion.

Ability 1 – Twilight Assault

Wherever Shen is on the map, he recalls his spirit blade back to himself. When the blade returns to him, Shen’s next three basic attacks are empowered. These empowered attacks deal an additional 12 plus 2.5% of his target’s max health (2.5 + 1.5% scaling with Ability Power) as magic damage. If the Spirit Blade passed through an enemy champion, the damage bonus is increased to 12 + 5.5% of the target’s max health (5.5 + 2% scaling with Ability Power), as magic damage, and Shen also gains 50% attack speed.

Ability 2 – Spirit’s Refuge

Using this ability, Shen sends its Spirit Blade to an allied champion or himself. This creates a circular zone that blocks enemy basic attacks for 1.75 seconds. This ability is the most useful when near an ally, in teamfights, or when the enemy has a lot of basic attacking champions. It is necessary to be careful of one thing though, this zone completely blocks the basic attacks, but it doesn’t block ability effects.

Ability 3 – Shadow Dash

He dashes forward, dealing 60 physical damage (60 + 15% of Shen’s bonus health) to enemy champions. He also taunts them for 1.5 seconds. This ability is especially useful in teamfights. Shen can dash through enemy carries and draw their fire, forcing them to attack him for 1.5 seconds. This is Shen’s second most important ability.

Ultimate – Stand United

This ability channels for 3 seconds, shielding an allied champion for 170 damage (170 + 135% scaling with Ability Power + 15% of Shen’s bonus health) for 5 seconds, increased by 0%-60% based on the targets’ missing health. Upon completing the channel, Shen teleports to the targeted ally champion.

This is Shen’s most important ability. It is also the first “truly” global ultimate ability in Wild Rift, as it doesn’t have any range. When players tap on this ability, they can choose from 4 of their allies. Tapping on their icons reveals where your allies are, and they can select one of them. Players can then shield the selected ally, and teleport to them. Using this, one can save his own teammates, or turn around a losing teamfight. This ability also enables Shen to roam effortlessly around the map, as he doesn’t need to worry about his allies’ positioning.

Skill Up Methods for Shen

Shen’s ability level up order is as follows:

  • Twilight Assault (1st Ability): Level 1, 4, 6, 7.
  • Spirit’s Refuge (2nd Ability): Level 3, 12, 14, 15.
  • Shadow Dash (3rd Ability): Level 2, 8, 10, 11.
  • Stand United (Ultimate Ability): Level 5, 9, 13.

Best Rune Setups and Spells for Shen in Wild Rift

Rune Setups

Keystone Rune – Grasp Of The Undying

Grasp is the best keystone rune for Shen. The reasoning is that he is a tank, and he requires a lot of bonus health to awaken his true potential. Grasp increases his health by 5 permanently, and also heals him, when he attacks an enemy champion after gaining 4 stacks in combat.

Weakness

Shen’s first and third abilities impair the movement of enemy champions. That’s the reason where Weakness is effective on Shen. Especially in teamfights, he can use both the aforementioned abilities in conjunction and immobilize more than one enemy champion at once. This makes sure that Shen’s team can deal a boatload of damage to the enemies, and win the fight.

Conditioning

Shen is a tank, and he can always use more defensive stats. Conditioning, after the completion of the first 5 minutes of a match, provides the player with 5 bonus Armor and Magic Resist, every 2 minutes. This can make Shen extremely tanky by the mid/ late game. It is a very beneficial rune.

Hunter Genius

Although this rune gives more Ability Haste, which reduces spell cooldowns when they would take down enemies. Three Ability Haste is guaranteed right from the start. Every single bit of Ability Haste is important for Shen, hence this rune works well for him.

Summoner Spells

Flash

Flash spell is necessary for Shen to engage with enemies, and to escape bad fights. Flash + Shen’s 1st Ability and Flash + Shen’s 3rd Ability are two important combos that players can employ. Engaging with flash can also bait out the enemies’ summoner spells, making Flash a great choice for Shen.

Ignite

Ignite is a very useful spell for tanky bruisers like Shen. It provides damage, and also reduces enemy healing. It can especially help when an enemy is very low on health and trying to escape. Players use ignite on them, and that’ll have a high chance of taking them down.

  • Sunfire Aegis: Shen needs only one thing to truly shine in games, and that’s bonus health. Sunfire Aegis provides 500 bonus health, making it a perfect first item for him. Its Immolate effect also helps with wave clearing, as Shen’s wave clear is poor.
  • Thornmail: Shen’s third Ability, Shadow Dash taunts enemies. When taunted enemy champions attack Shen, Thornmail will apply Grievous Wounds, reducing their healing and reflecting damage to them.
  • Gargoyle Enchant: When used, Gargoyle Enchant increases its user’s maximum health by 65%, making Shen even tankier. When there are 3 or more enemy champions nearby, the maximum health is increased by 130% instead. It is the perfect boot enchantment for Shen.
  • Dead Man’s Plate: Dead Man’s plate provides increased movement speed and more health to Shen. This item though can be replaced with Randuin’s Omen, if the enemy team has 2 or more Crit-based champions.
  • Force of Nature: It gives Shen 350 bonus health, and 50 magic resistance, making it a very well-rounded item for him.
  • Warmog’s Armor: This is the single best item in terms of providing bonus health in the game. It gives 700 bonus health to Shen and also provides him with 5% max health regeneration when he has been out of combat for 6 seconds. This helps him to rapidly heal up between fights. It is the best regeneration item for Shen.

League of Legends Wild Rift Shen Gameplay Tips

As we discussed before, Shen is a tanky Bruiser. He is a high utility champion and is very good at controlling the map. His roams are powerful, while he can hold his own against many champions in the Baron lane. Keeping all this in mind, our Wild Rift Shen Guide includes the perfect game plan for the early, mid and late game.

Early Game

Shen has good early game power. He can fight most of the Baron Lane champions 1v1 during the early levels and can come out on top. Despite this, Shen likes to take short trades. An example is the combo of 3rd Ability+ 1st Ability+ 3 empowered basic attacks. This combo deals a lot of damage early, which Shen can translate into leads across the map.

Mid Game

In the mid-game with Shen, it is advisable to group up for objectives. Shen can push his wave into the enemy tower, then teleport to them during a fight. Split pushing can be a viable option with him if the players’ own team is successful in holding off the enemies on the other side of the map.

Shen can also be used as second support during fights, shielding allies and damaging enemies. Another way to weaken the enemy team in the mid-game is to kill the river scuttlers and steal the enemy jungle camps. This will slow down their jungler, giving the team more time to get ahead.

Late Game

Throughout the late game, Shen is outscored by many other Baron Laners. Therefore, a decision should be made, on whether split-pushing is the need of the hour. Players can help the team and peel for the carries. In this scenario, if the team is playing badly, like, really, really bad, then split-pushing might be the better decision.

This is because Shen’s split-push potential is decent with items like Divine Sunderer and Hullbreaker. Hence, the enemy team has to send one or two of their players to stop him. When this happens, Shen can just taunt them and escape, while his team makes plays on the other side of the map.

On the other hand, if the team is doing well till the late game, it might be advantageous to help the carries. Shielding them, protecting them from enemy attacks, and taunting enemies will make it easy for the carry to kill them, are all the maneuvers that Shen performs nicely. Doing this can ensure that the carriers have become killing machines and destroy the enemy. Winning a teamfight with an ace for the team, and then getting an important objective/ pushing all the lanes, are some of the most definitive paths towards victory.

Now, let’s take a look at some champions in Wild Rift that Shen can counter, and some champions that can counter him.

Final Thoughts

Shen is a very versatile champion. Split pushing, protecting carries, he can do it all. His kit is really simple, and he is not as hard to play mechanically, making it easier for new players to pick him up and play him. Taunting three enemies at once, and not being able to damage the player is one of the most satisfying feelings in the game.

He is also great in all stages of the game and can be built flexibly, depending on the situation at hand. Overall, Shen is a very solid, reliable, and strong champion who will definitely shake up the Wild Rift meta. We hope this guide helps you when playing Shen, and we hope you have a lot of fun climbing the ranked ladder with him!
